Passage: Exodus 20:1—21
PRODUCE SOUND EFFECTS: table or chair; sheet of brown paper; masking tape; poster board, metal sheets or pie pan with beans; kazoos or paper trumpets. Asks kids to help you make a "mountain" near where you have group time. Cover a table or chair with a sheet or brown paper to represent Mount Sinai. Make a making tape "fence" on the floor around the mountain. To make a thunder sound, give two or three kids large pieces of poster board, thin sheets of metal, or a tin foil pie pan with beans or pebbles in it to shake. (alternate idea: kids can pat their legs and clap vigorously to make thunder) Give other kids kazoos, or roll paper into "trumpets." Assign a teacher o shake the table or chair while you flip the lights on and off on to be lightning. Kids make the thunder and trumpet sounds.
Tell kids they can gather at the mountain but not cross the fence. Explain that God is powerful and ifferent from us; He deserves the greatest respect. He was about to come to the mountain in a cloud and speak to His people. The mountain would be holy because God would be there.
God told Moses to tell the people how to get ready. They had to wash their clothes, just as people would do before they went to see a king in his palace. Anyone or any animal that touched the mountain would be killed. All the people would soon know that God has spoken. Practice making the sound effects.
